NYC Happenings
Here are a few exhibits and events that have our attention!
At Curriculum Lab, we use our Black Paint events to create space for conversation about curricular ideas sparked by the many opportunities to walk, think, and experience art and culture. Visit this page for an ongoing list of art and culture events that we think have curricular potential. We will share our insights on our group padlet. If you have a chance to visit, we'd love to hear about it!
Current
On April 1, join us to discuss Black Gotham's audio walking tour, Fighting Dark, which is in dialogue with Howardena Pindell's show Rope/Fire/Water, at the Shed. Here are some ways to experience Fighting Dark and Pindell's show, depending on where you are, how much time you have, and what interests you:
Closed Exhibitions
"Monuments Now" is an exhibition at Socrates Sculpture Park, on view until March 2021 (keep an eye out for a spring Black Paint event!). The artists featured in Monuments Now — Jeffrey Gibson, Paul Ramírez Jonas, and Xaviera Simmons — have each constructed a monumental counter-narrative to the figures and ideals commonly memorialized across the American landscape.
More about the exhibition from Socrates Sculpture Park:
"In this turbulent moment when we find ourselves reevaluating American identity and values, the MONUMENTS NOW exhibition at Socrates Sculpture Park seeks to address the role of monuments in society and commemorate underrepresented narratives such as diasporic, Indigenous, and queer histories."
As part of "Monuments Now", the "Socrateens" conducted research through conversation with residents of Astoria and created a Monuments Decoder Zine reflecting on questions of representation in monuments. "Monuments Now" also involves a "Let's Talk" series, inviting visitors to respond to questions such as have you changed your mind recently? and what is the purpose of discomfort?
